Boiled Sugar, Stainless-steel
Inspired by wartime hardware and architecture this ongoing series of solid sugar sculptures which, once cast, are placed within the artificial forests that surround Berlin, planted after the Second World War to replace the deforested region.
These cenotaphs for nature will weather and be consumed by the monocultural post-war ecosystem until only the skeletal steel structures remain. They will become a memorial of, and to, the absence of the natural.
The crystalline forms of boiled sugar amongst the pines exist between the artificial and the natural. What happens to an ecosystem when an industrially-enriched energy source is introduced? How should we consider our own impact upon a nature we created?
