Boiled Sugar
A gravestone, firstly milled by machine, secondly hand cast in sugar and finally consumed and dissolved by the natural world. This giving away of control through an inverted process of production, as well as the erosion of the manmade, examines production and the ephemeral as no trace of the sculpture remains after placement in the chosen environment.
Cast in boiled sugar, the symbolic nature of the form sits in contrast to its materiality pointing to a conflict in outcome – bees and insects gain energy through consumption of the sculpture but, as it is an artificial and alien food source, it does more harm than good.
